One of
Tuscany's best kept secrets is probably the Maremma. In this tract
of land - at the same time wild and gentle - which stretches along
the coast from Follonica to the northern end of Latium and inland
from the Colline Metallifere to the Monte Amiata, seems to live
to this day the magic and fascination of the once so grandiose
Etruscan civilisation. The coast offers some rocky beaches (Talamone,
Argentario) and mile upon seemingly endless mile of remarkably
unspoilt sandy beaches (Castiglione della Pescaia, Punta Ala, Principina,
Albinia), often hidden behind beautiful pine forests. Unique is
also the huge Maremma-nature reserve park, called "Parco naturale dell'Uccellina",
named after the birds for whom the wild area of pine-covered hills,
glorious beaches and untamed marshland is a main migratory staging
post.
Characteristic of the scenery are the large corn- and sunflower-fields,
olive-groves, vineyards, extensive areas of evergreen forests
and the typical "macchia mediterranea" as well as
the undulating hills topped with delightful mediaeval small
towns e.g. Massa Marittima, Roccatederighi, Manciano, Pitigliano
etc. The Maremma is one of the most significant archaeological
and art-historical regions and important Etruscan sites are
to be found, among others, at Vetulonia, Populonia, Roselle,
Savona etc.
